USPA NEWS - This years' 24 Hours of SPA was probably the most fought and full of suspense of the past few years. Infact after a full day of racing the top two contenders crossed the finish line only 7 seconds apart.
The Belgian Team WRT, René Rast, Markus Winkelhock and Laurens Vanthoor gave Audi their third race win of the past years.
The BMW Z4 (Marc VDS Team) together with drivers Dirk Werner, markus Palttala and Lucas Luhr tried to make things difficult for the R8 LMS Ultra but without succeeding.
The battle for first place began early on during the first hours of the evening up to when it seemed as if the BMW was favored to win after Audi had to pit for new set of brake pads and discs, 2 hours before the end of the race.
The turning point was when the Marc VDS Team pits for the last time 40 minutes from finish and decides not to change the tires on the BMW, allowing Dirk Werner to enter the track with a 20 second lead on the Audi.
Unfortunately for him, René Rast was behind the wheel of the Audi R8 and was closing the gap quickly to over take the BMW and win with a 7 second lead.
The Audi team also won third and fourth place. Following through the standings we find the AF Corse Ferrari 458 wiiner of the Pro AM class and 6th over-all.
Many accidents in the first stage of the race without serious consequences for the drivers.
